The boys deserve great credit. The dug out a result with a depleted team, making it five wins on the bounce to complete a very satisfying half term of rugby.
Playing uphill in the first half, Malvern weathered Abingdon’s initial pressure, tackled well and from any turnover ball, we looked to move the ball wide. Two first half scores came initially from Sam Agyeman-Duah followed by one from brother Sylvan, but the gap was narrowed just before halftime when we did not clear the ball from our 22m and Abingdon scored a try to make it 10 – 7 going into the break.
Malvern made a good start to the second half scoring early with Sylvan again outpacing the Abingdon defence to go in under the posts with Joel Cox converting the extra two points. In an absorbing contest, Abingdon came back with a try of their own, which went unconverted. From the resulting kick, inside centre Tom Birley produced a moment of magic, breaking through several tackles and managed to get an offload away to Sylvan who scored his third try of the match, and with Joel Cox converting it gave Malvern a bit of breathing space.
Our second half kicking game from half backs, Henry Worrallow and Joel Cox forced Abingdon to attack from deep, and although Abingdon scored a try in the last couple of minutes it proved but a consolation with Malvern coming through in a tight game 24 – 17
