Result: 18-28 (loss)
Player of the match: Anna Wentworth-Fritzwilliam
The U14’s travelled away to Thomas Telford for what we anticipated would be a tough match. Malvern started strongly, moving the ball through court with pace, sending the ball back to defence when we needed to reset. Our game plan for the first quarter was to keep possession and that’s just what we did! Fantastic balls into the circle by Lucy Underwood and Anna Wentworth-Fitzwilliam allowed us to gain an 8-5 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter Malvern had to stay switched on. Some great turn overs by Mary Needham and Amelia Scott kept the opposition away from the shooting circle, in order to keep our lead. Thomas Telford fought back forcing our centre court to make silly errors, they increased their physicality and by the end of the first half Malvern were trailing by 2.
Malvern continued to dig deep with only a small gap to close. There was some great defensive work from Cate Mercurio and Amelia Scott in the opposition circle that forced Thomas Telford off the back line, this allowed Malvern to regain possession and create another opportunity to work the ball down the court. End of the third quarter Thomas Telford were now leading by 7.
Malvern continued to work extremely hard to turn ball over to regain possession but a number of unforced errors cost us the game. A great first quarter performance from the girls however, which we will try to reproduce in the county tournament to come. Still lots of positives to take away from this game.
